Threat from Chinese Communist Party very real: Mike Pompeo

Washington, July 30

The threat from the Communist Party of China is very real, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Wednesday asserting that the Trump administration has begun to take all the “right actions” to rebalance the relationship with Beijing in a way that protects and secures freedom for Americans.

Pompeo also expressed hoped that the Chinese will decide that their commitments under the Phase one trade deal must be complied with.

“Will wait and see if they come through with their obligations there,” he noted.

Hong Kong postpones elections by a year, citing coronavirus outbreak

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam announced Friday that the government will postpone highly anticipated legislative elections by one year, citing a worsening coronavirus outbreak in the semi-autonomous Chinese city.

The Hong Kong government is invoking an emergency ordinance in delaying the elections. Lam said the government has the support of the Chinese government in making the decision to hold the elections on September 5, 2021.

South Africa’s cases inch close to half-million

Johannesburg, July 31

South Africa’s number of confirmed coronavirus cases is edging close to a half-million, with the Health Ministry reporting 11,046 new cases overnight.

That brings the country’s caseload to 482,169, including 7,812 deaths.

Corruption in the country’s pandemic response is also a growing problem.

On Thursday, the health minister in the country’s epicentre of Gauteng province was forced to step down over corruption allegations related to government contracts for COVID-19 personal protective equipment.

An organisation that successfully proved President Donald Trump violated the law when he blocked Twitter critics sued him anew on Friday, saying he continues to reject some accounts two years after losing in court.

The Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University sued Trump a second time in Manhattan federal court over use of his @realDonaldTrump Twitter account, saying the president and his staff continue to block some accounts.

Afghan officials say Pakistani rockets kill 9, wound 50

Pakistan fired a barrage of rockets across its southwestern border killing nine people and wounding 50 in an Afghan border town, Afghan officials said Friday.

The exchange of fire that led to casualties in the town of Spinboldak was instigated by Afghan border guards, Pakistan security officials said.

It was the latest cross-border exchange between the two countries. Earlier this month, Pakistan fired rockets into Afghanistan’s northeastern Kunar province killing three people.

The winning logo will receive cash prize of Rs 25,000. 

The government is looking to have a distinct identity for the ‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat Abhiyan’ by developing a logo based on creative inputs from citizens through a logo design contest to be conducted by, an official statement said on Friday. The last date for submission of entries in this regard is August 5.

‘AatmaNirbhar Bharat Logo Design Contest’ will be conducted by MyGov to encourage the spirit of innovation and self-reliance, the statement said. The winning logo will receive cash prize of Rs 25,000, it added. Citizen engagement platform MyGov has crowdsourced many logos of various departments and initiatives like Swachh Bharat, DekhoApnaDesh and Lokpal, it said.

UK car output plunges to lowest level since 1950s

London, July 30

British car production fell by more than an annual 40% in the first half of the year to the lowest level since 1954 as the coronavirus pandemic shut factories and dealerships, an industry body said on Thursday.

Plants and retailers closed in March and only some gradually began to reopen from May with certain sites still shut and others not at pre-virus levels.

The hit leaves output at just over 3,81,000 cars, the lowest level since 1954, when Winston Churchill’s government ended food rationing imposed as part of the World War Two effort.

In 2020, the industry expects to churn out just over 8,80,000 cars, a third lower than in 2019 in what would be the worst performance for over 60 years, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said.
